Augmented Reality Labels Explained

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality, also known as AR, is the blurring of the physical world with a digital environment. It's perfectly suited to labels, with so many options that can completely transform interactions with your customers or staff. Computer generated graphics and designs are overlaid on a physical environment, creating experiences that otherwise would not have been possible or practical. It's different to Virtual Reality (VR), because AR is rooted to the physical world around someone, rather than taking place in an entirely virtual setting or environment. From interactive learning to enhanced shopping environments with customised product labels, to innovative artwork or safety procedures, Augmented Reality has huge potential to change how people interact with the world. It opens up incredible new opportunities for product labelling, marketing, and more.

How can Augmented Reality be used for labelling?

The applications of augmented reality labels are practically endless, with all sorts of creative and imaginative solutions possible. Here are just a few of the ways that you could use augmented reality labelling:

Interactive Product Labelling in AR
Augmented Reality can make product labelling more interactive

Interactive Augmented Reality Product Labels

Point your phone at your product label, and unlock a whole new world of interaction and animation. From animated artwork to informative product overlays, augmented reality gives you the space and opportunity to further enhance the experience of purchasing and using your product.

AR Safety Information Labels and Diagrams

Augmented reality is a great way to communicate information, particularly if it can be better explained with diagrams or demonstrations. Your company app could detect labels on machinery to then display instruction or safety information in an interactive AR format.

AR stock identification and location labelling

Help avoid confusion and increase efficiency by providing an easier way for workers to identify products and stock. By integrating augmented reality, information can be updated in real time. So for example, you could scan a static label, and then be shown and directed to the real time location of additional stock.

Open AR experiences using labels

Labels and stickers can be used to launch an augmented reality experience through an App or App Clip download prompt. This gives you freedom to position labels wherever you like, such as in a museum or at an event.

Augmented Reality Label Proofing and Visualisation

The benefits of augmented reality aren't just limited to end users and customers - AR can be used as part of the artwork proofing process as a way to visualise designs and options. Label artwork can even be rendered onto existing product artwork and renders.

How do I get an AR label?

Most AR experiences will require some form of custom-coded app in order to work. This is because the detection of specific labels requires custom software; it's unfortunately not as simple as printing a special label and it being able to work with augmented reality straight away.

You'll need to contact a digital, marketing or app development agency to create the digital aspects of your augmented reality App or App Clip project.

If you need printed labels as part of your augmented reality project, Crown Labels are here to help. Send us an enquiry and we can work with you to ensure your printed labels meet the requirements of your project.
